About the Client

Uniper SE is a leading international energy company headquartered in Düsseldorf, Germany. Established in 2016 as a spin-off from E.ON, Uniper operates in over 40 countries worldwide, providing reliable energy solutions and services. With a strong focus on power generation, energy trading, and energy storage, Uniper plays a pivotal role in shaping the global energy landscape.

Uniper's diverse portfolio includes conventional power plants, hydroelectric facilities, wind farms, and natural gas assets. Committed to sustainability and innovation, the company is actively involved in the development of renewable energy projects and technologies to reduce carbon emissions and mitigate environmental impact.

Problem

Uniper SE had three main priorities:

  • Ensure and enhance the ongoing security of its websites
  • Guarantee all data is processed in the EU
  • Document and test an extensive variety of disaster recovery and business continuity scenarios.

With operations across more than 40 countries, the company recognised the necessity to enhance security measures, particularly in light of the changing political climates surrounding energy sources.

Additionally, Uniper wanted to prioritise data processing within the EU and establish a thorough disaster recovery and business continuity measure to mitigate risks and ensure uninterrupted operations.

These requirements needed a comprehensive security solution to safeguard its infrastructure, protect sensitive data, and uphold regulatory compliance standards.

Project Highlights

Solution

CTI planned and delivered a suite of security measures and checks for Uniper, involving proactive protection, data processing amendments, regular security scans and a refined set of tools to protect solutions against attacks.

As a Cloudflare Enterprise partner, we implemented Cloudflare technologies, including EU-only Edge Data Processing, Bot Mitigation, DDOS Prevention, and Layered defence utilising managed OWASP rules. In addition to this, we curate and provide Uniper with monthly security scans against the OWASP Top 10, zero-day vulnerabilities, and 100,000+ known security flaws.

We crafted comprehensive disaster recovery and business continuity scenarios integrated into regular ISO audits. These were conducted at agreed times during planned maintenance to demonstrate compliance should an extreme scenario arise.

Outcome

By deploying CloudFlare Enterprise’s advanced security features, including EU-only Edge Data Processing and Bot Mitigation, Uniper can effectively defend against evolving cyber threats, safeguard sensitive data, and ensure compliance with regulatory requirements.

Through strong disaster recovery and business continuity measures, Uniper has a solid framework to mitigate risks and ensure uninterrupted operations against unforeseen events.

Key results include:
